What is shirk and why is it the greatest sin?

Quick Answer

Shirk is associating partners with Allah in worship, lordship, or His unique attributes. It is the only sin Allah will never forgive if a person dies without repenting from it.

Detailed Answer

Shirk is the opposite of tawheed and the gravest sin in Islam.

Quran 4:48: 'Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating others with Him, but He forgives anything else for whom He wills.'

Types of shirk:

1. Major shirk (Shirk Akbar) — takes one out of Islam: - Worshipping idols, graves, saints alongside Allah - Calling on the dead for help that only Allah can give - Making vows or sacrifices to other than Allah - Believing anyone shares Allah's unique knowledge of the unseen

2. Minor shirk (Shirk Asghar) — does not exit Islam but is extremely dangerous: - Riya (showing off in worship) - Swearing by other than Allah - The Prophet ﷺ said: 'What I fear most for you is minor shirk: showing off' (Musnad Ahmad 23630).

3. Hidden shirk (Shirk Khafi) — subtle forms in the heart, like loving created things more than Allah's love.

Protection from shirk: - Affirm tawheed daily. - Make this dua: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating partners with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do unknowingly.' - Study tawheed seriously.
